What “Haraiso” Means

The name Haraiso came from Haruomi Hosono’s 1978 solo album “Paraiso”, created under the name Yellow Magic Band, before he co-founded Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO).
The album featured collaborators like Ryuichi Sakamoto, Taeko Onuki, and Shigeru Suzuki - and its sound was warm, eclectic, and impossibly free.

Paraiso means “paradise” in Portuguese, but in Hosono’s hands, it wasn’t a place far away. It was a mirage, a fantasy, a moment in between. In one song, he sings:

Paraiso - Haraiso

Let fantasy swell

A shimmering mirage

Let reality melt away

At the end of the track, the character leaps onto a boat from an old pier,
sailing away into the unknown - but then returns, just briefly, and says:

“Next time, it’ll be more better!”

I’ve always loved that line.
And I’ve always hoped Haraiso could carry that same feeling - hopeful, slightly clumsy, open-hearted.

So yes - The next venue, the next season, will be more better!

Haraisoという名のこと

はらいそという名前は、細野晴臣さんの1978年のソロアルバム『はらいそ』と、その中の一曲から名付けました。

YMO結成前、イエロー・マジック・バンド名義で発表されたこの作品には、坂本龍一、大貫妙子、鈴木茂など、後に伝説となる音楽家たちが参加しています。

“はらいそ”とは、ポルトガル語で「楽園」の意味。
けれどその楽園は、遠くにあるのではなく、夢と現実のはざまでふくらむ、私たち自身の中にあるものなのだと思います。

ふくらめ ファンタジー
蜃気楼 はらいそ
溶けろ リアリティー

浅橋から、異国の船に飛び乗って旅に出る主人公。
私たち、はらいその旅もまた、そこに重なるようです。

曲の最後、主人公がふっと戻ってきて放つ一言、

「この次はモアベターよ！」

この言葉がたまらなく好きで、「はらいそ」という空間も、そんな心意気でありたいと願ってきました。

だからこそ、次に出会う場所は「モアベター」。
もっと自由で、もっと面白くて、でもどこか懐かしい。
そんな空間をまたつくっていけたらと思っています。
